Happy belated Thanksgiving to all my American visitors out there! I hope you had a great holiday break and had some extra hobby time like I have had. While I wouldn’t say I’ve been painting tons over this break like I sometimes do, I have gotten a fair amount done even with my current addiction to Spider-Man on PS4!
The second Ruffian has been completed. Unfortunately, this sculpt was somehow rougher than the previous one. Look at that ugly mug! His face seems a bit too sallow in places for my tastes anyway but the rest of the sculpt isn’t bad. I was able to paint this guy up much faster than the previous one which was really nice. Its also encouraging as I have to paint this sculpt two more times. That is something I am not particularly looking forward to. I included the picture above with both Ruffians because I wanted to show how much better the previous one looks now that it has been varnished. It amazes me sometimes how shiny a miniature can appear under lighting and that is why I always use matte varnish (except for glossy parts like metal of course). With two Ruffians down, I only need four more to play my first Scouring of the Shire scenario!
While I cranked out some more Goblin Town terrain this week, I ran out of varnish and was unable to get much of the terrain varnished. My hope is that for next week’s update, I can get all the terrain I’ve finished out and see how much progress I’ve made on a Goblin Town board.
I also worked a bit more on Theoden since I was feeling motivated and rested enough to tackle the tiny little bits that cover this mini. While I can spot a few things that I can and will try to improve, I think he is really coming together and you can start to imagine what the finished product will look like. The amount of time and attention to detail this sculpt requires is pretty astounding and I’ve still got a long way to go on him. I’ll keep chipping away as I have the time and desire.
This upcoming week is likely to be my last week where the holidays do not impact my painting time so I’ll hopefully make some more progress on these projects and have some more good things to show off next week!
Nicely done on the ruffian – especially on his cleaver and his chain. Only recommendation I would have is to dull down his red patch, the eye is drawn to it, distracting from the rest of your fine paint job.

Thanks for the suggestion, Bret! I dulled the red down after seeing your comment and you were right. It looks much better now 🙂

Video games do have a tendency to steal away with hobby time.
Theoden is looking great so far. Nice work on the second ruffian as well.
Happy holidays to you. 😀

I try to balance video gaming and hobby time as I enjoy both but it is not easy and of course, there is never enough time in the day.
Thank you for the kind words on my painting as always! I hope people don’t get tired of seeing Ruffians as I’ve got a number to paint and am quite enjoying them 🙂
Happy holidays to you as well. May Santa be kind to you this year 😉
