Dark Angels Primaris Captain Done

First off, I have a service announcement. I have purchased the domain KuribosPainting.com and you can now access the site that way. You can still use the old address to get here but the rebranding has finally occurred thanks to WordPress offering 50% off their usual price. I think the new URL fits the spirit of the site much better now and frees me up even more to continue writing about whatever I’m passionate about so that is exactly what I will continue to do!

It took a month but I finally got the Primaris Captain finished. As you can imagine, it was a great relief to finish this project as I didn’t anticipate how long it would take and by the end I was ready for a change of pace. Here is how he turned out.

The final parts came together well and I don’t have anything too noteworthy to share about them to be honest. I did face a difficult decision whether to add weathering like armor chipping to his armor. While I think chipped armor, when done well looks great, I didn’t think it would look as good on the pretty dark armor and I was afraid that if I messed anything up, it would be really hard to fix just like the edge highlighting was. Some 40k painters will feel he is a bit too clean for their tastes but outside of my Fallout minis, I do prefer a more cleanly painted mini and think some people overdo the battle damage a bit so I wanted to avoid that here.

Having had this mini finished for nearly a week, I’ve had some time to reflect and I can say that without a doubt, he is the finest mini I have painted. It is often easy to say this or feel this way after you complete a mini but with this one, I think I definitely improved and I picked a “canvas” that helped me show off my abilities. I referenced the Ultramarine I painted in 2018 and how badly it turned out not too long ago and honestly, I was trying to paint that mini to look as good and in the same style as this one, I just didn’t know how at the time.

I’ve learned a lot in a relatively short period of time and can really be proud of that. That isn’t to say parts of the Primaris Marine didn’t humble me or couldn’t be improved, those are there too but I’m very satisfied with the final results and while there were times where I got impatient, I’m really glad I stuck with this project and I proved to myself and anybody out there who thought I can only paint “simple” Lord of the Rings minis well that that isn’t the case. I don’t have any proof that anyone thinks that but I still felt driven to prove it and spent a month doing so and it feels good to have accomplished that goal. I will submit this guy on Cool Mini Or Not and hope to get a higher score than the previous one. If I can score in the 8.0 or higher range, I have a good chance of making the “New and Notable” section which leads to receiving more votes (usually your score goes down when you land there) but it is a great feeling to get there all the same. I’d love to get 50 votes on a project one of these days as I think that might be required to ever get ranked on the site which would be an incredible honor. We’ll see what happens and I will let you know when this mini is available for voting as well.

Outside of that, I made a few purchases this week including a Throne Room set by Terrain Crate for my diorama and a display base from the UK that I really, really hope will work out. I think the display base is just about the right size to fit what I want to paint and it will certainly be an epic base if so. It was also a whopping $26 after shipping and annoyingly, shipping was more expensive than the actual base. It is a real bummer to see how much shipping prices to the US from the UK have gone up lately and I’m not really sure why that is. I hope it doesn’t get worse as there are a lot of great products I buy from the UK and it is my small way of contributing to America’s former colonizers 🙂 I’ve also been working on preparing the first MESBG mini I will need to paint but I’m not in a hurry to start that project at the same time since I just came off a long display painting level project. I have to admit, I am very fired up to paint this one (not unlike the Primaris Marine) but I’m sure I’ll talk more about that once I get going on painting that project.

I also bought the rules for Palaeo Diet for some potential future prehistoric gaming. I intend to write up a short review of it when I get finished reading it since there was a lot of interest in that. I also nearly have what I need to write up a tutorial on painting rust so look forward to that in the nearish future. I may actually end up writing more than one article a week sometime soon as there is plenty to discuss. Currently, I’m painting some gaming stuff for Fallout again and taking them at a very relaxed pace compared to the feverish way I finished the Primaris Marine. It has been invigorating to paint that way and I will look forward to sharing those with you all in the near future as well.
