Slow but steady progress and an improvement in my Fallout games

I have officially hit the middle section of painting Drazhar which is the worst/hardest part. When you get to this point, you have a decent sense of what the miniature looks like and while you want to speed ahead and try to finish the miniature, you can’t because you need to stay patient and keep painting your best. I’m trying to stay focused, patient, and motivated as I figure there is about two weeks of painting left to go. I did manage to get a section of Draz painted that was a bit stressful. The cloth part (which is hard to get great pictures of) is small enough that you can’t do a lot with it, yet it is prominent enough that you want it to look nice. I’ve seen most people freehand some letters on it but I decided to make it look battle-worn and scratched which at first looked terrible, but thanks to some advice from a friend, I was able to make it look a lot better.

But mostly, I worked on the back of Draz and made a lot of progress on it. This is the part of painting that isn’t sexy but will pay off at the end when everything is done.

The good news is that most of what is left to paint will be a bit more exciting and there will be more variety in the colors and surfaces so I’m hoping that the next week or two of painting will be more fun and get my motivation up a bit more.

I got my new mat from Deep Cut Studio in Lithuania this week and threw together a couple of quick pictures to see how it looks. The mat was expensive at $90 (you can get ones from a couple of US companies for about $60-70) but I’d have to say it was worth it. I’ve been wanting to get a mat that works better for Fallout 4 for quite a while and I’m happy to say it really does add something to the pictures below. They just look much more like Fallout does than the previous mat I was temporarily using. They match my terrain much better too.

Finally, to close, I was wrong last week when I said I’d be ready for the next Fallout Battle Report soon. I have to buy and paint one more miniature for the next tutorial scenario so unfortunately, I’ll have to wait a bit longer on that but that’s okay. I think the extra time will pay off and lead to a better looking and more satisfying result.

  1. Draz is looking stunning so far, definitely one you can be proud on when it’s all finished. You can really see the attention to detail and the amount of work you’ve put into him. I do think it could very well be your best work so far! It’s nice to follow along with the progress you steadily make on him.

    The mat complements your terrain beautifully. It looks really good! I hope you’re staying healthy and warm as well. Some exceptional weather conditions (lots of snow and cold temperatures) have hit the Netherlands over the past week, I actually don’t think I’ve ever experienced something like this in all my life living here. Not ideal moving conditions, so hoping for a bit more warmth to melt the snow away soon. Snow is pretty to look at it, but I don’t need it laying around for weeks, I’m more of a summer kind of guy. :p

    1. I’m glad to hear it isn’t boring seeing the same old mini for 3-4 weeks in a row. Sometimes I wonder if it might get a bit stale but I guess as long as there is noticeable progress, it isn’t too bad 🙂

      I feel like mats can be a bit of a crapshoot in terms of whether the image you see online will really match what you want it to and I’m so glad that this one does match the terrain.

      It has been extremely cold here too. Not the worst weather we’ve ever had in Chicago but still very cold and there is snow piled up on more snow. Today it was 7 degrees Fahrenheit and it was kind of miserable taking my dog out to go the bathroom. I hope you get warmer weather for your move as well. Battling snow and ice while moving things does not sound like a good time!

    1. Thanks, John and I’m happy with my purchase too. Deep Cut Studio certainly seem to be as good as Tablewar here in the US which is who made the other mats I own. I hope the stuff you bought from Deep Cut works well for you too 🙂

    But is it weird that I am more excited about the game mat? That things looks sweetly perfect! I’m gonna have to go through your blog to find previous pics and compare. 😀
    While I made my own game mats I’ve also purchased several and the quality of the prints is getting really good. Which mat did you buy?

    1. I was thinking the Dark Eldar looks pretty cyberpunk but those elements you pointed out are also very true 🙂

      I don’t think you’re the only person who is excited about the mat 😀 I don’t know if it has fully set in how much better this mat is going to be. The old mat really was just making use of what I had but it didn’t fit at all with Fallout 4 so this is a really nice upgrade. I bought the Urban Wasteland 2 mat from Deep Cut Studio. If you’re on a budget, TableWar makes good ones that are cheaper and they are US based so you might get fast shipping as I want to say they’re based in Cali. There are definitely nice mats that could fit your ACW games if you’re in the market for something like that 🙂

    1. I’m glad to hear you like it since you’re a fellow Fallout fan. I know what you mean about the online photos. This one looks different than it does online but I still like it and I feel very lucky for that as the others I bought didn’t quite match up to my expectations.
