The Brotherhood of Steel join the fray

This week’s update is going to be a short one because I’ve been working on a single model this week and all I have for you is a couple of WIP pictures. Please excuse some wear on some of the base as I tend to unintentionally rub paint off in those areas as I move my hands around and paint Fallout minis. That is also why I only basecoated those parts as I knew I’d have to go back and finish those parts last as it is. Anyway, without further ado, let’s see some power armor!

As you can see, this guy is very much a work in progress still though the back is pretty much done and looks quite nice if I do say so myself.

Of course, one thing that I will be doing is adding weathering which will add some more color to the mini which it needs. I will also see if I can’t tint the armor a bit more blue to help match the style of Fallout further. Hopefully if all goes well it will come out nicely and be a good start to the Brotherhood faction.

With this mini started, I now have 4 of the 5 factions in Fallout 4 started which is pretty cool. My collection feels pretty modest still at this point though I do have quite a few models that I have painted and haven’t gamed with yet so that is something to look forward to. As I’m sure I’ve mentioned before, I’m not all that fond of the Brotherhood in Fallout 4 compared to previous games. I think Bethesda threw us a curveball and made the Brotherhood pretty evil compared to past games to subvert expectations. At least they still look cool in their armor!

The main reason I picked up this mini is that I needed a model in power armor for the next scenario and this was the closest option I could find to the PVC plastic mini that comes in the starter set that I don’t want to paint due to the lower sculpt quality. Once this guy/gal is done, it will be time for another battle report which I’m very much looking forward to. I expect that in a week’s time, this guy will be done and I can start thinking about getting the next game in! I’ve also been looking for some more terrain projects that would be useful for Fallout and I expect to buy and start making my first bigger terrain project in the nearish future which should add some more life to my Fallout boards.

    1. Thanks, Dave! I didn’t realize you had given me a follow and I just now tried to do the same with your site. I’ve had trouble getting notifications from blogspot websites but hopefully I can follow your work on there regularly. I completely agree on the blue tone being needed and I’m getting anxious to get it added in fact! 🙂

      1. missed your last couple of posts by a little time, so hadn’t commented, but saw this one early enough to get a comment in. I know what you mean about the different platforms, wordpress doesn’t always come at the right time on my blog list, so try to keep a watchful eye out for missed posts ! LOL

      2. No worries at all and it can be really aggravating because you don’t want to miss things that people post and yet WordPress and blogspot seem to want to sabotage that from happening haha. Its very strange but I guess all we can do is try our best!

  5. Looking great so far.

    Your painting really brings the figures to life.

    I love the aesthetic of Fallout power armor, especially in Fallout 4. As for Bethesda and The Brotherhood of Steel, I quite agree with you. It annoyed me that every faction was annoyingly tainted or corrupted in some way. Even the Minutemen had to have that backstory plot of some becoming raiders. My wife was very surprised when I joined the Institute rather than the Brotherhood because I am normally such a Brotherhood fan.

    1. I was eagerly awaiting your feedback as a fellow Fallout fan, mate. I’ve seen some well painted power armor minis but I think (and hope) to get an even more realistic look/effect on this mini than others have achieved. We’ll see if I reach the peak of that mountain or not 😀

      I completely agree on every faction having serious issues. They really leaned into that hard which is weird because I remember Fallout 3 and New Vegas having clear factions that were good and bad. It could be that my memory is a bit foggy though! I was appalled by how bad the Brotherhood is in Fallout 4 so I’m curious to play through those missions and see if I can stomach them or not! I’ll probably report back whenever I’m able to do that just to commiserate haha.

  6. That’s some sweet highlighting and shading you’ve done there. Can’t wait to see this when it’s finished! I wasn’t so concerned with the Brotherhood in F4 compared to previous games. It actually makes sense to me as they did preserve enough of their internal logic even if they did come across as a bit puritain and fascist. I mean, they have guys called *Paladins*, so you know there’s something going on there…
    I just ordered the Fallout Boardgame, so hopefully it’ll be here in a week, and I’ll then have some boardgame PVC Fallout models to paint! It’d still be good to see you paint up the Power armour guy – perhaps take a knife to it a little and add some battle damage to it so you’ve gone something to paint around and add interest/distraction on the inferior-to-resin sculpt.

    1. Thanks for the kind words, mate and I can see where you’re coming from on the Brotherhood. They’re cool as the underdogs and a secret society but when they actually get power, their ideals go to far. That is a good interpretation and makes me appreciate them a bit more!

      That’s awesome about your latest purchase. I assume you mean the FFG one? Those minis don’t look bad for board game minis and I think you’ll have fun painting them. I’ve heard the expansion for that game really improves it as well. I thought FFG would go wild making a lot of content for Fallout but they really haven’t and I have to think they aren’t going to though I’d love to be wrong!

      Your idea for the PVC plastic is a good one. I’ll definitely give it some thought. There are a ton of different power armor minis you can get for Fallout Wasteland Warfare so I’m going to be painting them quite frequently over the coming months I imagine.

      1. No, well deserved on the painting there! And yeah, the FFG game. I checked out a few reviews of it in the past and disappointedly decided to pass on it, but I just saw the deck of cards that turns it into a fully co-op game, and so between those and the improvments from the expansion, and it’s just like a real Fallout game – a bit of a trash fire until patched!
        Maybe the best way to paint the plastic one would then be alongside but just in advance of another PA model, and as a testbed for any new things/looks you want to experiment with on the more important resin model.
        That’s one valuable thing that the various PVC & boardgame models (D&D, Bones, Nolzurs, etc) are doing for me. Low-stress test models. Like that snail and its shell. PVC Bones model there, so it looks decent, but it was a quick and easy job. Later, when I have some highly-detailed and “important” resin or GW model and want to use the same technique, I’ll do it with much more precision and care. Exactly the same deal with that Purple D&D dragon.

      2. Haha, you’re exactly right. The board game mirrors real life in that sense! I tend to view lower quality gaming sculpts the same way. They’re a great chance to try out something new. For me, I usually need to have a gaming use for a mini that is a lesser sculpt but I think your attitude is better than mine and I should aspire to be more like you and a bit less picky 🙂 Its easy to get in a mindset where if the sculpt isn’t up to your standards, it isn’t worth your time to mess around with it but that isn’t always the case.

    1. Really glad to hear it! Earlier this week, I hadn’t yet put the edge highlights in and I was thinking, this just doesn’t quite look good yet and once I added them, that did the trick so it is nice to know that great minds think alike 😀

    1. They always have heads, its just a question of how long it takes to show that part 🙂 All Fallout minis that I own come from Modiphius. There are some alternative sculpts out there that aren’t to scale so that is mainly why I stick to the official ones. I’m sadly not much of a converter too so that doesn’t help either!

    1. Now that is a real Fallout-style glitch! Only in a Bethesda game could you be locked out of a faction due to a bug. Unless you like the more evil factions in games, I don’t think you missed too much!

      2. That is really unfortunate luck, mate! I hope you weren’t too upset being forced to pick Minutemen. Not having all of the options is definitely not ideal.

      3. It was fine actually as it got me the castle. My son wanted me to by automatron DLC and it glitched so we got the robot, but wouldn’t let us proceed, all that happened after that was getting attacked by lots of robots.
