MESBG – Eomer Mini Finished

I was really close to getting Eomer done last weekend but ultimately was slowed down by needing one paint to finish him and having to order it online. I figured it would be better to just wait and show the finished mini instead of one that is 95% done so I pushed back this update until now. Thankfully, the remaining parts came together pretty well on this mini. Here’s a look at the finished product.

I did try to do a couple of new things like painting Eomer’s spear in a Steel NMM look with different colors. I think it mixes the colors up nicely on the mini which has a lot of warm colors as is. The shield also came out fairly well though the sculpt on it was kind of tough to work with. It has some tiny details and a lot of the sculpted parts make creating a wood effect difficult. I ended up edge highlighting it and trying to make it as realistic as I could. I thought about doing some kind of creative green scheme but in the end, I went with something close to what GW used on the shield and what matches the movies well.

And that is it for the mini itself. It goes without saying that I’m really pleased and proud of how this one came out. I thought it would be interesting to do a size comparison of this mini compared to my most recently completed project. The scale on Warhammer has really gone up as this guy is practically 54 millimeter scale! I guess it isn’t hard to see why Eomer was quick and easy to complete compared to Stormcast Eternal too.

All of the display painting I’ve been doing is really paying off and to be frank, while I do enjoy parts of Warhammer (especially anything that makes me nostalgic for when I first got into it), Lord of the Rings is more meaningful and enjoyable for me to paint. It is something I enjoy collecting and will enjoy displaying more than Warhammer as well. So I think all of that leads to a very enjoyable experience.

I’m having a bit of trouble getting the display base’s surfaces as smooth and professional looking as I want but I’m turning my focus towards that now. I also need some supplies to finish the base so we’ll see what I get done this upcoming week. Its possible that I may not have much to show or need two weeks before my next update. Thanks for your support along the way and I have big plans to make this base the best one I’ve done yet. We’ll see what I can accomplish soon enough!

    1. Thank you for the kind words as always, John! One thing that I enjoy about LOTR minis is that realism is generally welcome and appreciated so the little details like the wood really pay off.

  6. Excellent finish o Eomer Jeff, had wondered why there was no post last week, your attention to every detail has paid off and it is a stunning piece. Sorry to hear you can’t get the results that you want on the base, this could be down to the materials you’ve used as you will have many different textures in there, and the different materials will all take paint differently as well.

    1. I learned in the past that sometimes with a longer project, skipping a week and not showing the same model over and over, isn’t a bad thing! Thanks for the kind words on the painting as well. I also have to thank you again for suggesting wood filler with MDF a while back because the milliput I was using on the display base is what was causing me problems. It just kept coming off in clumps when I sanded it. I used some wood filler instead and resanded today and I think I finally got a smoother finish that I’m satisfied with. It was just in time because I was getting pretty frustrated. Your suggestion of wood filler has paid me dividends multiple times now!

  7. Beautiful work mate. Another miniature brought to life by your artistic talent. Eomer really helps me now understand just how big that AoS figure is. Wow! Both have amazing painting and I really respect your work.

  8. Excellent attention to detail! I think it was a good choice going with the shield – it came out much better with the stance than I think the helmet would’ve.

    1. Thank you, Bret! I’m glad GW included the helmet as it gives you a cool option with Eomer but I suspect a lot of people (since this is a Strategy Battle Game after all) will choose a shield since it seems more realistic.

  10. Beautiful painting, Jeff! The shading and highlighting are wonderfully subtle, his face is awesome and the greens on his shield complement the reds beautifully. Nicely done, and I’m glad you’re so happy with the result!

    1. Thank you, Stew! I didn’t realize the Stormcast was that big until he was basically assembled either. Scale creep has happened subtly to me anyway because I don’t buy Warhammer stuff terribly often. Pretty soon we won’t be painting miniatures at all! 🙂
