This week’s update is action-packed with triumphs, humiliations, and lots of pictures. First up, I have made a fair amount of progress on Hellboy this week. I think it might be useful for me to do a side-by-side comparison image of last week to this week. Here is what the front of the mini from last week and now this week.
Obviously with all of the progress, the second picture just looks better but I’m struck by the improvements to the face. I went a little too dark initially and now I think Hellboy looks more like himself. The skin is looking nice all around and I think the leather on the boots looks nice too. I still need to finish his shorts and various accessories but once I do that, there won’t be too much left to do which is great. Here’s one final look at him from a different angle. I always think that miniatures that look great from different angles are a sign of a great sculpt. I’ll let you be the judge here!
So that is one good thing that happened this week, here’s one thing that wasn’t. I’ve been working on building my Dol Guldur ruins that I got for my birthday from my brother and it has been an interesting experience. I think the kit is great quality but it is a bit fiddly and not the easiest to put together. Someone more creative than me can probably do some cool stuff with this but I find the amount of pieces a bit overwhelming too. I didn’t make it easy on myself because I glued something the wrong way but I stupidly used super glue and while trying to break the pieces apart to undo the mistake, this happened.
I wasn’t shocked when it happened and was cursing my decision to use super glue. I’m sure if I had used plastic glue, I would have been fine and I had no need to use super glue. This was meant to be a display piece and didn’t need to be as sturdy as terrain after all. If there is a world record for number of terrain kits a single hobbyist has screwed up, I have to be getting close to it now! I haven’t fully decided what I’m going to do with the kit. My original plan was to fully build it and then make a diorama with all of the Hobbit Ringwraiths from Forge World. They happen to cost about $200 so that was going to be an expensive and incredibly time consuming project. I probably have no business doing something that large so I might cannibalize some pieces and make a couple of smaller display projects featuring a single miniature instead. I just need to figure out how to pull apart one of the pieces that is super glued pretty well to go in that direction…
On the more positive side, I got some exciting purchases in the mail. I think I might have mentioned that Modiphius offered 33% off on anything they make and so I took them up on that offer and without any shipping notification or tracking, I was surprised to receive a package this week. First, I got some Heavy Consoles which I think will look perfect as a backdrop for any kind of Institute base. I’ve wanted to get these so I could take a group shot of my Synths so I’m looking forward to getting these done.
I also got some junk barricades which I think will look great between buildings or to make something feel a bit more like a Raider or Survivor base when I’m playing Fallout. They have a lot of detail and will take some time to paint but should be worth it in the end. I can’t mess up building them since they’re a single piece as well!
I also got a couple of physical versions of new rule supplements. Astoundingly Awesome Tales 1 and Into the Wasteland. I will write up reviews for both of them in the coming weeks once I finish reading my current book and can give them a more detailed read. I got notification that some more Fallout terrain I ordered from Black Site Studios in November after messing up the Highway Overpass has also shipped so things are looking good as far as my promise to get Fallout terrain done in 2023.
Finally, I said that I have plans on getting my room neater, more organized, and actually decorated this year. To help motivate me, I’ve decided to boldly show it off so as to “publicly” hold me accountable. My wife thinks this is a ridiculous thing for me to do but the room is disorganized and messy and I’m tired of it. Funnily enough, I am already imagining that regular readers will say it isn’t that bad or their hobby room is worse. I guess we all have our limits and I just want to see this room looking good and being what I envisioned when we moved in. Its a long way from that in its current state.
My hobby desk has a lot of clutter on top and the side storage is messy and disorganized too. Solving the storage situation is something I hope to do in 2023. I also need to do something with that IKEA lamp. I like the look of it, but it serves no purpose in my room and is just sitting around waiting to be better utilized.
While I was lucky enough to get a new computer chair a week or so ago after the old one started molting faux-leather like a reptile, I have a combination of hobby supplies and painted stuff that I never unpacked after moving a year and a half ago. There’s also a bunch of cards I’m getting close to shipping out for sale so that should help things a bit. If I can create some more storage space in either my desk or in the room, I figure I can get that corner cleaned up finally and hopefully can add a display case over there.
I want that display case because I shouldn’t have really nice miniatures sitting on this shelf being exposed to dust! Other than that, I’m fairly proud of this shelf and the video game collection that my brother and I have acquired over the years. I have a few things to figure out like what to do with my Amiibo (Nintendo figures in the bottom-left) and how to display my Gameboy collection but at least this is one part of the room that I’m fairly happy with. In case you were wondering, photos were turned around in that picture to protect the innocent (namely my wife)!
The closet is doing okay. It is less full than when I last showed it though I’ve never found a great place to put my folding tables. Its convenient having them on the floor so that’s where they’ve stayed. There are a few things in the closet that are my wife’s that are not going to be in there forever too so I’ve actually cleared some room out of there which can be used to store miniatures and terrain in the future which was my goal. I also promise I’m not flexing with the autograph from Sean Astin on the floor either. I got that as a bonus for buying some cards several years ago and I’ve never really known what to do with it. I hope to find a better place than the floor for my printer and I’ve got some MESBG books that I’m likely going to sell or get rid of on eBay at some point this year so that will help clear up some more clutter.
So yeah, lots of work to do this year on this room and I hope to compare these photos with what it looks like at the end of the year and see a lot of improvement. If not, I’m hopeful that regular commenters will publicly shame me and demand that I do better in 2024!
