Fallout – An Icy Raider

I have more modest progress to show than expected this week. I spent nearly all of the week painting a single Fallout mini. Its another raider and one of the more colorful in the box. Not only does she have pigtails and a gas mask (which surprisingly are uncommon in Fallout) but she also has an interesting base with window frames and broken glass. I tried to improvise something that looks like broken glass. It looks a bit like ice though as well for better and worse…

I decided to give her blue hair as well because I thought it would be a fun challenge. Technically, I have painted blue hair before on Drazhar pictured below but I did some photo referencing and found a scheme called ice blue that at least some girls have nowadays. I don’t know if it looks as different from Drazhar as I anticipated but I’m happy with it.

As has been the case with the last few Fallout minis I’ve painted, I haven’t applied any rust to this lady yet and I think it will look quite a bit better when I do. I’ll certainly share a photo of the finished mini when I get around to it. I know used to complain that the Synth minis take forever to paint and these Raiders which are covered in straps aren’t a lot better. I have four more in the Core Box to paint but thankfully only two of those are covered in straps so at least there is some solace there. I’ll keep chipping away at them as the mood strikes.

I got my new gaming table this week and it did not go as expected. The table is really high quality and I don’t think it will collapse unless you put over the recommended weight of 350 pounds (!) on it which is great. The table is also quite tall so you can play standing up which I really like too. However, the table weighs 40 pounds so its not as easy or simple to setup and take down as I expected. I really should have double-checked on that before I got it but oh well. After setting it up once, I now know that I need to start lifting some weights to help make it easier for me to handle it. We’ll call the extra motivation to exercise a bonus! Please pardon the mess behind the table in the photo as well. A lot of that is recycling and remnants from the packaging that hadn’t been disposed of at the time.

Next weekend is the MMSI (Military Miniature Society of Illinois) show here in Chicago so I’ll be “exhibiting” my latest display projects and hoping to win a medal for my efforts. This will be my first time attending this show so I don’t know exactly what to expect. They use an Open System of judging so instead of doing what Games Workshop does where there is a top 3 (and some consolation prizes for other entries but no trophy obviously), in the MMSI system, if 20 people show up with Gold level work, they each get a Gold medal, no questions asked. So it should be both illuminating and a bit more rewarding than entering Golden Demon and getting a green sticker! I’ll have a full report sometime next weekend I would imagine.

As I’m sure some of you know, Games Workshop previewed some more new minis this weekend and there were a couple that got me excited. There were a lot of “Character” or “HQ” type of minis this go around. My favorite by far is the new Imotekh which has a really cool looking cape. Somebody out there is going to do something crazy awesome and innovative with it, I predict. He might be the mini to finally get me to paint a Necron again. I’ve been reluctant because they are not easy to paint in NMM but the desire is absolutely there.

And how about those Bretonnians for The Old World!? GW showed off a lot of that army surprisingly and they look great. Even just the fairly simple infantry models look great. I haven’t painted one in forever but I like a good standard bearer like the Bretonnians are getting.

While she is simpler than the lass on a unicorn, the Handmaiden is also great. She’s clean, she’s simple, there’s tons of ways you could paint her, and most importantly, she looks like a blast to paint.

Truthfully, I could show nearly everything GW teased for The Old World because it all looks fantastic. The Old World really, really appeals to me as I like “classic” or traditional fantasy miniatures and I can see myself painting a lot more stuff in that space instead of Age of Sigmar and Warhammer 40k for display projects.

In this week’s Comics Corner, I managed to read two more new series from Image Comics. I think the first volume of Image Comics is coming to an end soon so we’ll see how Comics Corner evolves once I can no longer easily check out new series. Anyway, on with the reviews!

Undiscovered Country – First up, its another post-apocalyptic book and its written by Scott Snyder who also wrote Nocterra, which I really liked. This book is a lot different and kind of the opposite of Nocterra. It starts off with a convoluted plot that’s not easy to get into. The US put up giant walls and withdrew from the rest of the world. There is also a pandemic threatening the globe. If this sounds a bit like the Trump administration, then you would not be wrong. Fortunately, most of that fades into the background once the characters get over the wall and enter the US. It turns out that the book is actually Mad Max in the US but everything’s on acid.

That is really what Undiscovered Country focuses on and its fun once it does. Since the US is now a maze of walls, it seems like every volume is going to be pretty different from the last since it focuses on a different section that is walled off. That sounds intriguing. It took a couple issues for me to get into it but once I was done, I felt like I’d like to see where it goes from here.

3.5 stars out of 5. I will be reading the next volume when I get the chance.

Starlight – While nothing I’ve read this year surpasses, Y The Last Man, this is undoubtedly one of the better things I’ve checked out. This is another Mark Millar book as I continue to try to read everything he’s written. It turns out that he really likes Unforgiven because this is basically Unforgiven meets Buck Rodgers or Star Wars. I won’t spoil anything as usual but the first issue is actually quite emotional and it makes you feel for the protagonist. From then on, the story is a fun pulp story full of action and adventure. While the plot and characters are pretty predictable and not terribly original, this is a really fun and satisfying read. I had a hard time putting it down. Best of all, there is just one volume in the whole series so its easy to get the whole story.

I didn’t love the art when I started reading but it grew on me and I think the artist brought this world to life nicely. I haven’t read a lot lately that I’d really recommend but this is one that I think just about anyone would enjoy. So if you’re at all intrigued, be sure and check it out!

4.5 out of 5 stars. I would gladly read more if there was another volume to read.

Excellent work on the raider Jeff, the blue hair is cool and different to Drazar, it reminds me of Sasha Banks hair colour in 2019. as for the glass, it looks good but could do with some dust on it, being it is on the floor. Great you have your new table, and sounds like you might need to up the amount of arm days to make life easier ! LOL
    GW releasing lots of models you like just means you have a lot more options when you choose your next project ! LOL Hope the competition goes well for you, and you are able to get feedback from the judges, as that can be priceless.
    Interesting looking comics, the bottom one really reminds me of Flash Gordon and Ming the Merciless

    1. Cheers, Dave! Sasha Banks is a good call. I hadn’t thought of her but she is definitely a famous person who’s had blue hair at various points. I think some dust on the glass is a great idea. I’ll add some on before I varnish and add rust effects.

      Yeah, this table is going to force me to buy some weights so its costing me more money than I expected in the end haha. And GW has already put out plenty of great options for me. I have more now than I can really follow through on. In that sense, it is a tough time to be alive haha!

      Thank you for the kind words on the competition as well. It will be curious to see how it all goes. Its going to be a lot different than Adepticon and Golden Demon for sure.

      And lastly, Starlight is definitely inspired by Flash Gordon and the villain looks a lot like Ming the Merciless. I don’t know how mean Ming is in Flash Gordon but the villain in Starlight could be given the title “the Merciless” too, I reckon! 🙂

      1. I have to admit, I don’t know my Flash Gordon from Buck Rogers! It was all a bit before my time and my Dad wasn’t that into Sci-Fi growing up so that didn’t help either.

  4. Nice to see you finish another Fallout figure done and that looks like a great gaming table!

    I think the figure that would give you the biggest challenge would be that handmaiden. It would be different from what you have been doing and would put your glazing skills to a test.

    1. There’s lots more that need to be painted so its nice to get some paint on another!

      The handmaiden (and the lady on a unicorn) would both be excellent challenges. I might even fail to get the face right and need a second sculpt if I’m being honest. I think a female Games Workshop figure is definitely in my future.

      Also, sorry the Bengals got one over on your team on Sunday. It looks like the Bengals are trying to play bad for a few games and then try to win everything yet again. Its a strange strategy to use year after year…

      1. I was camping so missed the game and the aggravation of watching it, just the general disgust of reading the recap. Seahawk strategy is to not let fans getting comfortable at any point in the game.

        I agree the female figures would be a challenge, not the usual warhammer/fallout faces or armor.

      2. Sometimes things work out well like that. The Bengals are winning games but their offense is not really putting up many points. Its hard to believe they have a chance against Kansas City or Miami at this point in the season but we’ll see. I hope that camping was enjoyable and that the weather was good. It feels like its been a week since the weather was any good here. Its been raining like the Pacific Northwest after having a drought all summer. Go figure!

    The weight of the table sounds challenging but it is great that it will be solid enough for your gaming. That is an important issue.

    Both of those graphic novels sound right up my alley storywise and I love the art work.

    1. Thanks, mate! And yeah, the table is just big enough to be challenging to setup and definitely heavy enough to cause some difficulties too. I can’t complain at all about the stability though. It seems really solid.

      I think you would find both graphic novels interesting and enjoyable. I don’t know how easy they would be to find in Germany but they’re well worth a read if you have the time and happen upon them.

  6. Whew, lots of topics! First, the Raider looks great and I sympathize with the straps. More and more I really don’t like painting straps, belts, etc. I think maybe the glass needs to be a bit darker?
    You found one hefty table for sure, haha! I haven’t played games standing up, but I use a standing desk for work, so that’s intriguing.
    The Imotehk guy’s pose looks like it’s lifted from Dr. Doom (or Darth Vader). Very classic villain pose. I don’t usually like the GW studio painters, but that Handmaiden is really nice. I love the green tint on white. I need to try that sometime.
    Undiscovered Country sounds interesting. Might have to check that out!

    1. Probably too many topics! I’ve been saying next week’s post will be shorter but it hasn’t happened yet.

      These straps are really small so they require some finesse to paint well. I prefer GW’s chunkier straps, if I’m honest. The glass could definitely be improved as well. I’ll see if I can make it look a little better. I should probably do some photo reference to figure out what its missing.

      Its great to hear your thoughts on the new minis and unsurprisingly, I agree with everything you said. I’d recommend trying some glazing if you want to get a similar effect to the ‘Eavy Metal team.

      Undiscovered Country could develop into a really nice series. I think there are three volumes out right now. I’m not sure if Scott Snyder is still writing it currently or not. You know how it is with Image books. They don’t necessarily finish and if they do, it tends to be slower than a Marvel or DC book.

      1. Oh, that’s too bad…the Image series I’ve followed kept the same writers and usually artists throughout. But I’m thinking of some of their longer titles like Savage Dragon, Walking Dead, and Invincible.

        I haven’t painted any Fallout minis (I’m assuming they are 32mm), some can only imagine how bad they are.
        I’ve had a few 28mm with a bit too many straps for my taste.
        And the Van Saar Necromunda pretty much made me quit painting after highlighting all those stupid little plates! 😜
        But the most important thing is you got a great looking Raider! 😃

      2. I probably could have described that a bit better! With Image books, it isn’t so much that the creative team changes, its that they stop making the series, sometimes prematurely. Meaning they make a volume or two that might have an interesting premise but I’m guessing for business reasons, it doesn’t get finished and you never get the full story. I think the Image books that have bigger named creators on them are somewhat likely to have the writer/artist pulled into bigger projects with other publishers and then the Image books they started get left behind as well. Savage Dragon, Walking Dead, and Invincible are the rare exceptions that are popular enough that they get to go on until the creator is ready to wrap it up. Saga will definitely be in that category but I’m not sure off the top of my head what else will have a 50+ issue run. I’d guess it is a very slim percentage compared to what is released. Not that every comic is going for that of course, I think there are some that are happy to be a volume or two long before calling it quits and there’s nothing wrong with that.

        Fallout minis are 32mm but non-heroic so they’re slimmer than what GW makes. The straps are so small that its hard to edge highlight them. I have done it on previous minis but it is a pain. The “scratched leather” look is easier so I’ve been doing that more and more. Its always nice to get some more Fallout minis done. They take me about a week per miniature on average so its taken quite a bit of time to build up my collection and there are so many more to paint as I get the time and desire too.

        Oh and don’t think me mental, but I’d love to paint a Van Saar mini. Those plates are great for display painting! 🙂

        I’m pretty sure it was after painting those that I dropped out of painting for a good year or more. I don’t think that was the only factor, but GW’s lame handling of Newcromunda and painting all those little bits definitely turned me off. I think our daughter was becoming more of a handful too, so there wasn’t as much time anymore. I kind of wished I had for back into painting by painting D&D minis though, I could have enough for just about any Fantasy game now and probably a SciFi one too. I’m not a fast painter though. There’s probably been a few minis I’ve painted in 6-8 hours. But it’s hard to say because I tend to jump from one to another. Plus some of my stuff is batch painting…and one of the batches I’m painting now seems to be taking longer than it would have to paint them one by one. I’m sure I’m wrong about that, but they have been taking forever and I’m ready to be done with them.
        I understand what you mean about Image titles. Yea, some don’t sell well enough and get cancelled or the creator leaves. That last part really sucks when it’s a favorite creator. Thats happened quite a bit throughout history. The artist gets a really good idea, but then doesn’t pick up enough people and so they either leave or it gets cancelled. I think they are way less lenient nowadays that they used to be. X-Men and Daredevil were on the cusp of cancellation in the past. DD probably many times. But even Wolfman/Perez’s New Teen Titans was near cancellation but they pushed for a few more issues and it’s become one of DCs most well known group of characters. So you never know!

      4. You can bet that I’d only paint one Van Saar because I’m not playing the game. Those minis are like the ones for Infinity in that they favor smooth painting which is my calling card 🙂 I struggle with batch painting too. I don’t enjoy it that much. I basically only do it for Hellboy which I’ve barely painted lately. I much prefer to take my time with a single miniature and see how far I can take it. I have the luxury of painting an hour and half to two and a half hours most days though. I’m very lucky in that regard. Even with that privilege, I still say paint at your favorite speed and whatever delivers the results you’re looking for or find most satisfying to achieve.

        I guess when you think of it, any series can be cancelled or end prematurely. For me, I find a situation where there clearly was a much bigger story to tell but it ends much sooner than the author intends to be more frustrating for whatever reason. Its also hard to mentally commit to a series if you think it won’t ever finish I suppose. That is not easy to predict though!

      5. I try to paint an hour a night, five days a week. When I’m in the swing of things, I tend to stick with it pretty well. When something throws my schedule off though, it’s hard to get back on to it. Was the same way with running for me. When I was single, I ran all the time, like clockwork. Family life made that much harder though. Not that I’d ever give up my family, haha!!
        Oh yea, following a series that suddenly ends sucks quite a bit. I tend to start things that have already been out and are usually finished already. Same with TV shows. Partly because I’m so far behind, but also it gives me the chance to see something from start to finish.

      6. I think an hour a night for five days is great! I’m a big believer in good habits and painting is one of those things where doing it consistently can only help you. Having said that, there are interruptions sometimes and those aren’t a huge deal or anything to worry about so you don’t have to Rip Van Winkle your family or anything like that 😉

        That is very true on watching TV show that is ongoing versus one that is completed. I’m the same way and its nice to dig into a story without having to wait to see the ending. I think that is probably more fun than waiting truthfully, but it takes great patience to wait for a series to finish at the same time.

      7. There are so many TV series out there, that I can generally find one to watch that has already finished up. If we end up having I wait a year for the next season, we both tend to forget what happened anyways! 🤪
        I guess there have been a few exceptions, like Gam of Thrones, the LotR series, etc. where I wanted to watch those right away.

      8. This is all well said and I completely agree! LOTR: Rings of Power was a rare exception for me too. I wonder when we’ll get another season of it. Its feels like it has been a while now!

      9. I’ve been wondering that too. While neither Rings of Power or House of Dragons are my fave shows ever, I would like to see where they go. What I’m really dying for is Daredevil: Born Again. Such a great story and I really hope they do it justice on the screen.

      10. Would it surprise you if I said that I agreed with you? 🙂 I didn’t see House of Dragons but I enjoyed Rings of Power for what it is. As I reflect, I think the Daredevil show is not only the best Marvel show (easily) but probably my favorite TV show since Boardwalk Empire. Its really good.

        In terms of Born Again, it is a little concerning that the people from the original show aren’t involved and Disney just fired the writing team they had. Having said that, Rogue One was a similar mess in terms of getting it made but is a great movie in my opinion so there’s still reason to hope! I just really hope they don’t let us down with this one.

      11. I thought Charlie Cox, Bernthal, and D’onofrio were all signed on? If they left, that will be horrible. I was hoping the same actors for Karen and Foggy would come back. Though considering what happens to Karen, I’m not sure how they would work that. She seemed too wholesome, but I guess that would make it even more dramatic if she could pull it off.
        Boardwalk Empire was really good. Mindhunter probably would have been my favorite show ever, if they hadn’t cancelled it. 😣

      12. The actors are all still committed to the project thankfully. Its more that Disney hired writers, they wrote stuff, Disney determined it wasn’t going to work or wasn’t good enough and fired the writers and are starting over basically.

        In Born Again, does Karen have AIDs/HIV? I know I’ve heard that in one version of Daredevil she does but I have never read whichever run that is. If that is Born Again, it would be tough to pull that off with the previous actress because she is very wholesome like you said.

        Glad to hear you like Boardwalk Empire too! The scene where you find out the WWI vet who wears a mask died tears me up every single time because it is so well done and is unexpected.

      13. Hmm, here’s hoping they get things aligned. The Netflix DD show was about as perfect as I think I’ll ever see that DD story done. I’m surprised Miller refused to watch it, because I think they did a great job sticking to the source material. Probably due to problems he had with Marvel bd their use of his character. Bad blood I guess.
        Yea, Karen’s life (and Matt’s) become a horrible mess. I think I’d be even sadder if they kept that actress, as she was so likable and it would be even more tragic. But that would take some dramatic acting chops to make that believable.

      14. Unsurprisingly, I agree with everything you’ve said here! I’m hoping Daredevil is good too and I’m a little bit nervous it won’t be up to the same quality. The level of the previous show is just going to be hard to match and I don’t envy the writers for Born Again one bit!

      15. Yea, so far I don’t feel like any of the Marvel shows were as dramatic as Netflix’s DD. I thought Moon Knight might get there, but it didn’t. That is pretty worrisome.
        I like some of the Marvel shows for what they are, but Born Again needs time to be more like the Netflix show to do it justice.

      16. Agreed. I didn’t watch very many of the other Netflix shows but I’ve seen the Marvel ones up until Loki and I don’t think anything else matches up to DD. I think there is a question of whether the TV shows are good enough to justify them being cranked out at so high a rate or maybe that’s just me!

  7. Nice work on that raider. I used to know a girl who always wore her hair like that (same colour too), wonder if she’ll be a raider after the apocalypse? Guess we’ll find out soon enough!

    That table looks nice and solid. Better heavy than flimsy I reckon, and you should get a lot of use out of it.

    Good luck at the painting contest, sounds like they score things with a far more sensible system than GW etc.

    Imotekh looks good. He doesn’t really excite me personally but then again I’ve never been that keen on the Stormlord as a character. Looks like one of those models that really shines in the hands of a display painter like yourself. Same thing goes for the Handmaiden. Personally I was most excited about the Striking Scorpions (arguably the best Eldar in my book).

      I don’t know anything about Imotekh as a character and I’ve failed miserably to read anything Warhammer related since I pestered you about it. The shame of it all! Those Striking Scorpions should look great painted up too. Truthfully, when I “played” 40k, or to be more accurate, painted and never really ended up playing the game, the Eldar minis were really old and unimpressive, particularly the Aspect Warriors. I have no idea why I bought them in hindsight. Truthfully, its hard for me to wrap my mind around them being impressive sculpts now and I don’t give them their due. The Howling Banshees for example are excellent. Having said that, I will be sure to mark this day in the annals of history as the one where Wudu got excited about some Space Elves! What a great day to be alive 😀

      1. Haha! Once or twice over the years I may have claimed that I’d start a little Eldar collection “if GW ever makes decent new models for the Striking Scorpions”. Time to put my money where my mouth is..?

      2. I think so and here’s another wild idea! Try painting those Space Elves up in a brighter and more vibrant style and see how you get on with that. I have a feeling you’ll do well with it and of course, if you have any questions, you can always drop me a line 😀 I think it is a great chance to push your skills and see what you can do in a different style.

      3. I’ll definitely be painting them in a brighter style than I usually use. I know I tend towards the dark-and-gritty, and I would want to keep a bit of that, but I don’t think it would suit Eldar to be as grim and grimy as most things I paint. I’ll definitely be coming to you for advice when I get to that stage. Right now I’m pondering colour schemes. Part of me leans towards blues and greys, and part of me wonders about a royal purple. Dunno, I’ll cross that bridge when I get there. The scorpions themselves will almost certainly be in the studio style, or maybe black and yellow.

      4. There are ways to get the darker tones into a miniature you’re painting without relying on the typical grimdark tricks (lots of black and brown washes). Its easiest to do that with glazing like I do in display projects but I’d have to think about how to accomplish that with gaming miniatures effectively.

        With all that said, I think its great you’re thinking about schemes already. I really like the purple idea but I’d recommend looking around on the internet for inspiration too. Something will get your fancy and with the Eldar, your imagination can absolutely run wild.

  8. Well I’m late to the party LOL! Great work on the raider, the mini’s hair and gasmask remind me of Foxtrot by Hasslefree Minis. I feel your pain at painting all those straps, they really can be a nightmare to highlight not to mention miss and get browns all over your mini’s clothes!

    That gaming table looks great, and good luck at the competition!

    As for the new GW minis, the only one I don’t like is the Necron; its pose is way too stereotypical of a movie bad guy. But the Bretonnian and the Handmaiden are superb.

    1. Cheers, mate! I’m glad you like her. I’m working on another currently and its nice to finally make some progress on these.

      I think Undiscovered Country has quite a bit of potential and I hope you enjoy it when you read it. I think there are three volumes out now though I’m not sure if it is going to continue on or not. I get the impression that it was designed to be maybe like ten volumes or so but its not easy to make it that far in comics so we’ll see what the future holds.

  11. Just dropping a quick comment in here to let you know I spent most of today painting the base of the same female Raider you did in this blog post. I did the shards of glass last and I was very much inspired by what you’d done with yours so thank you for that! Side note: I bought the junk barricades during the Black Friday sale… wow, are those things HUGE! I was very surprised when they (finally) arrived. They were about double the size I was expecting them to be. It’s going to be a while before I get around to painting them as I have all these Raiders and many other factions to paint but hopefully I’ll get to them before 2025. 😉

    1. I’m glad to hear it was useful to you and that you got the mini done 🙂 The junk barricades are very large and they took me quite a while to paint one up. The military barricades are smaller and much quicker to finish so I wasn’t quite prepared either. I need to get back to painting the other two junk barricades this year. As soon as I get this large scale miniature I’ve been working on done, I’ll definitely get back to painting Fallout!
