Fallout – Advancing in the name of science!

Its been another fairly quiet hobby week for me so this will be a shorter update. I did go back and fix the railroad tracks and was going to take a picture for this update and I noticed that I somehow spilled some paint on it. How that happened, I have no idea, but fixing a couple small spots is now on my to-do list for the upcoming week.

Fortunately, I did finish another mini this week and its something a little different this time. The last Institute mini I have to paint in my Core Box (because I am skipping the poor sculpt I mentioned last week) is a scientist. They don’t play a prominent role in Fallout 4 until you get close to the end of the main story but they are important to The Institute because they make the synths after all so I enjoyed painting him/her. Here is a look at the mini.

This mini was a bit of an unexpected challenge because I used Nilakh Oxide from Games Workshop for the first time which is nearly a wash consistency and so adding white to that to try to create the highlights led to some pretty thin paint. This mini doesn’t provide a lot of opportunities to use layering so hopefully the highlights I did on the suit look good enough. The rest of the Scientist came together pretty easily and I did find time to go back and repaint the Synth with the poorly painted rifle to match this one and the more recent Gen 1 Synth. I didn’t bother taking a picture but when I do get around to an Institute group shot, I’m glad the rifles will all have a similar paint scheme.

The one thing that is keeping me from doing an Institute group shot is I’d like to get some suitable terrain to complete the image. Fortunately, Modiphius now has a shipping center in the US so shipping from England doesn’t cost an arm and a leg! I intend to but quite a bit of the resin Fallout terrain that I haven’t been able to find at retailers here for well over a year soon as I’m excited to add it to my collection. I’d probably order some any day now but I think I might plunk down a fair bit of money on the Hellboy Board Game’s Kickstarter that is about to end. That might knock out my wargaming/board game budget for the month but it would give me a chance to get some rare and cool things for the game next year. It will also grow my backlog even further which is not ideal but I don’t think that has stopped almost any wargamer before!

Assuming the postal service cooperates, expect something a bit different as I take a break from painting Fallout minis and turn my attention towards Hellboy minis and terrain for Fallout.

  2. Your scientist turned out awesome Jeff, especially as you were using a technical as a normal paint, very brave man trying that. Look forward to seeing what you do with Hellboy
