Fallout Wasteland Warfare – Utility Protectron – Done

  1. Nasty end for those brushes! I’ve been exploring alternatives to Windsor and Newton for a few years as they restricted UK stores from sending them to Australia and they’re ridiculously expensive here now. Rosemary and Co is what I’ve settled on now and they’ve been great so far, hope you enjoy them!

The protectron came out great! I try to avoid sub assemblies as much as possible for gaming models but they are a necessary evil sometimes.

Is that Batman shooting someone? Parallel universe Batman seems to have given up on his no guns rule!

    1. Alas, the brushes’ lives were cut short! I didn’t realize that Windsor and Newton was hard to get in Australia. From what I gather, Rosemary and Co., is very hard to get in the US. You really have to go looking for them. I’ve started trying them out this evening and I like the longer brush tips more than expected. Its much easier to keep paint from getting in the ferrule with these which is really nice.

Subassemblies can really cause headaches, especially with Fallout minis as they can be a little hard to glue together. GW kits are much easier, even if they’re more complicated overall.

Haha, a very astute observation! He shoots Alfred no less but he doesn’t kill him. Batman doesn’t really use guns much as I recall. I forgot that that is a big deal in Batman!

      1. Rosemary also have a miniatures range with shorter bristles if you’re into that. I love the longer bristles up until my detail painting (tiny stuff like eyes) and then I like to switch to the shorter bristles.
I believe they make the artis opus brushes which may be easier to find in hobby stores. Rosemary and co will be more likely to be found in art stores I think. No idea what tariffs will do to prices for you though.

      2. I will have to see if I can find the shorter bristle brushes for the details. I found last night that the 1 is not small enough to handle that kind of work. I have heard that about AO and Rosemary brushes basically being the same. Artis Opus brushes a bit more expensive which is why I’ve avoided them for the most part. They seem to be marked up for the name and not so much for brush quality, to me. Sadly, nobody knows what is going on with tariffs and that especially includes the leadership in this country. You’re lucky to be in Oz is all I can say!

      3. That definitely helps! I don’t think I’ll get another Series 33 size 3. Its too big for what we do unless you’re basecoating a tank with a brush or something like that and I don’t see that happening in the near future!

  2. Nice work on the Protectron, Jeff! πŸ™‚ Looks really good! Sounds like not so good news with the brushes – I find the larger brushes I use do that over time but the smaller ones are OK. I use GW brushes as I’ve found them to be the best balance for price and quality for me, but I’m not painting to anywhere near the standard you are!

    1. Thank you, John! I’m glad to hear you like it. I would have never guessed that you used GW brushes though they are easy to get and reasonably priced so it makes sense in hindsight. I used to use Army Painter brushes for the first couple years of painting and now I try to directly support the UK economy by buying expensive brushes made in your country haha! In all seriousness, its not necessary to buy expensive brushes though they are really good for certain things like glazing so that’s mostly why I spend the extra quid on them!

  3. Excellent work on the protectron Jeff, looks very much like the reference picture you showed last time. Brushes and where you get them from can change over time, and sorry to hear about the companies that are already suffering from the current situation.

Great reviews on the comics as well.

    1. That’s really nice to hear! I forgot to post the reference again but I had a similar thought when done. I guess I’m ultimately switching from one UK brand to another (assuming that Rosemary works out okay) but you’re right that there is an adjustment period all the same. It was nice to write about some comics as its been a little bit!

    1. It sounds like I’m on a roll with you and I’ll take that haha. The freehand was the hard part. It was annoying covering up that dark grey paint repeatedly until I could try the freehand again. In that sense, I’m relieved to have this mini done!

  4. Arg, $20 brushes! I am so freaking hard on brushes, I just buy the $5 ones at the local big box arts store, that way I feel way less bad about throwing them out in a month or three!

Great job on the painting front.

  5. I think the bot looks great!

it won’t surprise you that I get brushes cheaply at hobby lobby. I wait till they have the sale on art supplies and buy them for like $2-$4. I use and abuse them and then toss them like ex lovers. πŸ˜€

    1. Thanks, Stew! Haha, part of me is not surprised but part of me is. I can’t believe Hobby Lobby is on the West Coast. Its so… Midwestern/Southern. It feels like they should have Chik-Fil-A in Hobby Lobby stores, if you know what I mean πŸ˜€
