Cut Off The Head – Fallout Wasteland Warfare Battle Report

  1. Great battle report Jeff, the power armour is deadly, as is the minigun ! LOL The board looks great, for the cul-de-sac setting, what would add a lot, is bases of rubble where houses would have been, being not very deep they would be easy to store, but give the impression there used to be houses there.

    1. Thanks for reading it, Dave! I have used the minigun in the Fallout video games and I can confirm that it does its job very well just like in the report haha. I really like your idea for some “destroyed” houses or lots. I’ll try and file that one away for the future! I’d love to make some kind of a driveway for some of the houses one day, but I haven’t figured out a good way to do that. Fortunately, I do have some ideas for other things that will add to the suburban setting so I’ll have to see if I can’t get started on those at some point this year.

      1. Those are the ones. They’ve been around since the 1930’s, if you can believe it. I don’t think they’re especially beloved but they are easy to find here in the States.

  2. Those Raiders look awesome! Very nice photographs, terrain and battle report as well. Obviously I was rooting for the Survivors, so that was a bit disappointing. Still, it sounds like you had fun and the rules sound appealing. Everytime I read one of your Fallout battle reports, I feel an itch to buy Fallout minis.

As always, looking forward to more 🙂

    1. Thanks, mate! Glad to hear that you like how everything looked. I shouldn’t admit it but I generally am rooting for the Survivors when I’m using them too. It doesn’t always help them win though and that was the case this time. I know you’ve got plenty on your plate with MESBG but I’d be fascinated to see what you think of Fallout, if you ever decide to play it. I think your perspective would be very interesting since you do a lot of solo gaming like me. On the flip side, your most recent report got me thinking about how fun MESBG can be as well 🙂

  3. Once my infantile brain got passed the comment Cait is well rounded (why yes, yes she is) I could focus on the battle report itself.

Battle report with a cul-de-sac, destroyed buildings and barricades – excellent!

I think you are right that a longer range rifle would have helped the survivors, how much does line of sight affect the game?

    1. Welp, this blog has gone to the dogs after this comment haha. The double-entendre was unintended and thank you for drawing attention to it! 🙂

I’m glad you can see the visual improvements as well. And to answer your question, you do have to see a model to be able to shoot at them though cover mostly makes it harder to hit and damage your target a little bit. I’ve definitely caused a decent amount of damage when shooting at things in cover. It doesn’t afford a lot of protection, though I think that its balanced properly in the grand scheme of things.

The biggest mistake I made was taking a miniature that is worth 100 points (and Nuka-Girl would cost even more if I gave her a second weapon so that she can shoot twice a turn) when I could get two run of the mill settlers for around the same price and equip them with good rifles. Their shooting skill would be lower than Nuka Girl’s but when they can shoot four shots a turn, instead of one, most games that is going to pay off statistically speaking.

I guess the MESBG equivalent is loading up on heroes and then watching your opponent gang up on them and bludgeon them with superior numbers of inferior fighters. Hopefully I learned my lesson this time around and I will do better at picking the participants though time will tell on that one!

  4. Nothing like beautiful miniatures and terrain telling a story! First time reading about this rule set, I have Factions but haven’t looked at this one yet! Looks cool, and definitely had some great cinematic moments to it!

It feels like Nuka Girl would have worked better if she had some sort of rally buff worked in to her statline, but yeah… for the points I would have hoped for more, too!

Once again, loved the terrain and minis! This was great!

    1. Thanks for the kind words! I appreciate when anyone reads a report because they are long truthfully.

I haven’t played Factions myself since I’m mostly a solo gamer but Wasteland Warfare has a ton of theme to it, if that is something you’re looking for. Factions is probably going to be more popular in the long-term because its a bit more of your tradition 1 vs. 1 wargame which a lot of people prefer.

I totally agree with you on Nuka-Girl. She was a special release (kind of like a promo miniature) so if her rules are a little half-baked as a result, that would make a certain amount of sense. It is a shame though as she looks so cool that you want her to be a strong unit on the battlefield!

  5. Good report, Jeff! 🙂 Very nice looking game. Good to get a new faction on the table as well. I think I’d be tempted to just reduce Nuka-Girl’s points value and see how that works out, maybe so you can add one basic Survivor for the same points overall total.

    1. Thank you, John! It was a good time all around. I really like your idea about adjusting her value. That would be a good way to “fix” her in terms of balance. Otherwise, I fear she’ll be gathering dust more than featuring in future games!

  6. What a tale! On the one hand, I’m sad the see the goodies (such as there are in Fallout) getting a whooping. But on the other hand I’ve been a fan of Ms Smiley since you first posted her so it’s great to see her doing well on the tabletop. Anarchy continues to reign in the wasteland!

    1. Haha, I’m glad you enjoyed it, mate. I didn’t plan or expect it, but from a “lore” or narrative perspective, Ms. Smiley proved her worth and why people fear her in the wasteland! 🙂

  7. Loved the look of the game, the terrain and minis both look great, nicely done! As a person with absolutely no knowledge of the game the forces did look a bit unbalanced, the raiders had the larger numbers and a member in power armour with a minigun! Presumably the survivors have some abilities to make up for this, but clearly it was not enough in this case!
