While there are some exciting things on the horizon for me in the hobby and for this website, this will be a more restrained weekly update for a couple of reasons. I started working on a miniature and am about 60% done with it. I am excited about how it is shaping up so far for a variety of reasons. I started working on a Super Mutant Skirmisher because after a weapon or two broke, my Super Mutant force is looking pretty thin. It also is lacking in gameplay variety which is not ideal either. I just checked and realized that it was four years ago the last time I painted a Super Mutant. That is shocking to me because I really like working on them but alas here we are. Here is a look at the super mutant so far.

This picture came out just a bit dark but you can hopefully see how it is shaping up. Before I got started, I checked some references from Fallout 4 and discovered a few things. I remember not liking it a few years ago but a lot of the super mutants wear green armor plates with some blue ones mixed in. I painted all my previous super mutants in a cold blue that doesn’t exactly match the in-game models. While I’m not crazy about the green armor plates from a color/design perspective, I figured, I can match the art and style of Fallout a lot better now so I might as well go for it. I also noticed that Super Mutants can have pink noses and knuckles so why not go for those too? A lot of Orc/Goblin painters like to add pink to their noses and I think it does give a nice bit of personality so I figured let’s give it a shot. All in all, I think this Super Mutant matches the in-game Super Mutants much better than my previous ones. Here’s a Super Mutant to show you what I mean.

Of course, some rust is really needed on the mini still and I look forward to adding it as well. When I get this mutant done, we’ll also do a little comparison of an early Super Mutant versus this new one and discuss what it means going forward for that corner of my collection.
Truthfully, painting has been challenging because I ran out of some paints I’d like to use on this mini and will hopefully get them on Monday and Tuesday and I’ve realized that while I like the new Rosemary and Co. brushes, I need a smaller one for details pretty badly so I’ve gone ahead and ordered one. I’m making due in the meantime but it will be a relief when the new ones I ordered today show up.
In the last week or so, I’ve realized that I’m just about ready to tackle a display miniature and work on something a little more “art” focused for a bit. I always know when its time to change gears because I start daydreaming about whichever type of painting I’m not doing. I’ve done a pretty good job of getting Fallout stuff done lately too so I can feel good about that. Fortunately, I’ve had a little bit of a creative breakthrough and I know how I want to handle a miniature that I’ve owned for a bit but felt a bit stuck on so I look forward to getting started on that possibly this week if I can get the Super Mutant Skirmisher done fast enough.
Lastly, I have written up a “bonus” article about a mystery subject so expect an extra post from me during the week. It will cover a new and different niche within our hobby that is gaining in popularity so I will look forward to your thoughts on it when the time comes.
Looking good so far, Jeff! 🙂 Looking forward to seeing it finished, along with your “bonus” article!

Glad to hear it as I seem to recall you are a fan of the Super Mutants in general! I also hope the bonus article is of interest too. I can see it having some use in the type of settings you like to work in but we shall see 🙂

Oooh, you’ve left that with a bit of a teaser! 🙂

Off to a fantastic start Jeff, I notice in the reference picture there is also a little pink on the elbows, and a tiny amount on the knees, so you may want to add some to those areas as well. Look forward to the bonus article and your new display project

I think you’re right. I also think I might want to experiment to see if I can come up with a lighter shade of pink that works well for those areas too. Glad to hear it and I think the bonus article will be of interest considering our previous collaboration. That’s a pretty big hint I’m giving away there!

I really like where that super mutant is going. Wonderful job on the skin, really like the reds you’ve worked in there. The rich blue is also really nice, that should work really well with some rust on it.
Interested to see what you got for the smaller brushes, I hope our conversation last post was helpful there.

Thank you, Nic! I haven’t seen anybody else paint the Super Mutants in this way so I am proud of that part of their scheme. I’ll take some better pictures of the skin from different angles as well.
Our conversation did help though I had to buy what the market dictated a bit more than I would have liked but such is life!

Another disgusting figure underway! Fallout Wasteland is not a place for those who like clean bright colors.
An mystery blog? Cool.

I don’t paint greenskins much so its definitely a change of pace. Fallout does have some nice pops of color in it but the Super Mutants aren’t the best examples of that to be sure.
I think the subject matter might be of interest to you (not that I’m trying to sign you up for new projects, you have plenty like myself) but I’ll be curious to hear what you think of it all the same.

I had to go to a different color palette as I was tired of doing green and browns – that’s why the blue and red victorian gyard!

Variety will keep you in this hobby and tedium and repetition will not! You just reminded me that I misread your Instagram post from the other day and I thought you actually played Aliens vs. Brits(?) so my comment was a bit off base. It was definitely a cool scenic shot and I say this as a non-Aliens fan!

Looking good. I really like the deeper recesses on the skin where the orangey-brown contrasts with the green. Do you start with the brown and work it up into green, or the other way around?

Good question as always, mate. I start with the reddish-brown and work my way up to the greens. It takes a bit of practice to get the colors right as there is a middle phase where it looks a little too red when mixing in the green paint that you want to skip over until it is green enough if that makes any sense.
